The Inca Indians left no written record but appear to have used an intricate system of twisted string and knots--khipu--to encode numbers and perhaps events, concepts, and ideas. This article explains more. Khipu may also explain why the Fluxus Indians claimed that the Sheep Shank knot was a clever dirty joke.

Demonstrators in the western city of Nantes waved banners reading: "No to 2007" and "Now is better!" The marchers called on governments and the UN to stop time's "mad race" and declare a moratorium on the future.
