stick chart

One of a couple experiments inspired by Micronesian stick charts.
These charts served as aids to navigation, were usually subjective and specific to the user, and ran from the charting of islands and ocean swell patterns to individual memory cues.

I most recently saw one on display (while I was, ironically, fog-bound) at the San Francisco Airport.

God damn it, now I'm going to have to start making stick charts now, too. These are just too cool. Thanks.

I've been meaning to ask, what is your sculpture representing...what kind of a personal map is it, and what does it map onto to?

I was first drawn to the stick charts for their beautiful forms. The fact that they had a purpose made them doubly attractive.

I made this for the form and am letting the purpose sort itself out.
